Centimeters and inches represent real-world physical sizes. >A pixel represents a dot on a screen. Doesn't say a thing about the size of >that dot or the distance to the next dot.
That's because a pixel *cannot* be equated with a physical size except when running an LCD monitor at full resolution. Think about it: My 19" monitor supports 640x480 and 1280x960 -- at one resolution, every pixel is twice as large as at the other. But your computer has no way of knowing whether those 640x480 pixels are being displayed on a compact 9" monitor or a huge 22" display. Unless you physically measure the number of pixels per inch and tell your computer what your dpi is at the current resolution, it doesn't know points from inches from cm. All it knows is pixels. -- Dan Knight, president, Cobweb Publishing, Inc. <http://cobwebpublishing.com> <http://lowendmac.com> <http://digital-views.com> <http://digigraphica.com> <http://lowendpc.com> <http://reformed.net> I was to learn later in life that we tend to meet any new situation by reorganizing, and what a wonderful method it can be for creating the illusion of progress while producing confusion, inefficiency, and demoralization. -- Petronius -- G-List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
