Apples small market share has NOTHING to do with a STABLE OS.
Ever run Windows 95? Yeah, now that is as stable as quicksand. Windows
98? Solid as Jell. Windows ME? Yeah, now THAT is stable...RIGHT!
No, the problem started originally when IBM et al released the "Clone
market" and prices dropped so low for PC's compared to MAc. John Q.
PErson could afford one or two.
These meant a larger audience for which the writers and companies could
sell products.
Micro$oft just took advantage of the opportunity and used marketing and
advertising (and some real extortion tactics) to put their software in
front of the user base.
I just switched BACK to Mac (G3/Beige w/ G4/450) after a brief absence.
If PC users spent any time (Pre XP) with Jaguar, they would know
stability.
Now, XP is (and 2000) fairly stable. I run a Dell notebook with XP, and
a Windows 2000 server (I am a Network consultant and need these for the
LARGER market). I don't do anything on the server, so it is never
pushed. The XP machine can crash every once in a while, depending on
what legacy program I try to run on it. That may be a consideration for
why Apple moved AWAY from Classic type abilities. These were not all
that stable either.
No, Apple does not attract the increase only because the PC users are
so many, and just the word of mouth alone is overpowering. If you were
a PC user, would you show your friends which MAC to buy? Sheer numbers
is making the difference now!
Personally I do not believe Apple will ever get to a very large user
share. I am only hoping they can maintain the one they have, and keep
it profitable so that they continue to write an OS like Jaguar!

Jaguar, what Windows XP WISHES it could be......
