Hi

my B&W G3 freezes during startup just prior to control panel load with or
without the two internal hard disks (e.g. with Norton or OS9 disk in CD
drive only). All CD's and both HD's with different installs of OS8.6 freeze
at the same point - just as the custom startup screen appears and just when
i'd expect the control panel icons to appear along the bottom of my
screen...

- also - no peripherals are connected except keyboard and mouse, holding
down shift or spacebar has no effect although alt-ctrl-p-r works but zapping
the p-ram doesn't solve anything. The mouse cursor doesn't freeze and there
are no error messages or sounds - just the startup screen stays there
forever - i left it on for a number of hours to see if anything changes but
didn't

I've never seen anything quite like this - would there be some uniconized
extension that loads even before the extension manager and freezes without
an error message...

I have to conclude it's not software and it can't be the hard disks and I
took out the RAM chips one by one. I suspect (something on) the motherboard
is gone. Swapped that little clock thing (battery?) with another G3, swapped
the ATI rage card, took out the scsi card and nothing works...

If I can't fix it then most repair shops will have trouble too and they will
likely quote a large number. So I'm thinking - since mine is one of the
later B&W G3's - can I obtain and install a G4 motherboard - must be
compatible, no? Surely - there isn't much else that can cause the problems I
got.

Maybe there is somewhere in NW London I can go for help... I have not much
money to spend...

Many thanks

Zig
