Les, If Tech Tool Pro can't fix your Directory/ies - and they can get corrupted by all sorts of odd things, try to use Disk Warrior - it's incredible what screwed-up directories it can repair - in fact it replaces, and doesn't repair "damaged goods".
Generally better than a full re-install of everything, although if yr disk is developing bad spots, a low-level format might be best in the long run.
