G'day from Oz.

Thank you for that answer.

Uunfortunately I have a 233 mhz Rev A beige desktop. There is a major
discussion thread at Apple discussions about these little bastards, plus
heaps of moans everywhere.

Apple produced a bad Rom in the 'A', that basically refuses to talk to
the usb extensions correctly when a PCI/usb card is installed, (or vice
versa), and freezes the Mac on startup, even with extensions off. This
mostly occurrs under 9.x, but some users report it with 8.6. 10.x is fine.

A few (expensive) cards work, most don't.

A (sometimes) work around is to delete 6 v1.5 usb extensions, and
re-install the 6 from the previous v1.4.1 download from Apple. They keep
it on-line just for this.

A lot of cards still don't work, and mine bloody don't.

Apple refuses to fix the extensions.

Rather than buy another card, I'd like a B or C rom, which makes the
problem go away. It also has the extra benefit of allowing an internal
slave ATA iede drive.

This way, if I ever want to change the card, no hassles.

I only want to drive a Kensington usb cordless mouse at this stage, so
bought a cheap taiwanese card ($25 Oz, about $12 US). I have one of
their $35 Oz FireWire cards and it's flawless. It's accessing a 5
partition 80 Gig Maxtor, in a USB2/FireWire New Motion duo case, which
is the cheapest and best I've ever seen.

So, I'm betting the usb card will be just as good, if I can get it to work.

My son has also just bought a usb digital video camera, so I expect him
on my doorstep any time.

The only other thing to do is Jaguar, and it's Classic environment, but
I've read so many bad things about G3/Jag combo's, I don't want the
hassles there either.

I will not go to an iMac until they bring out a 19" screen, as my 17"
trintron is just fine. I've also got an Epson Colour 800, and an Agfa
Snapscan 600 (both scsi).

So, I've added to my G3, (CD burner, 40 Gig Maxtor internal, extra ram,
FireWire), and will give the whole shebang to my daughter once I upgrade.

Thanks

Santa
