You have to be very careful in OSX when dragging icons to another 
volume. I haven't sussed out the exact circumstances but sometimes 
you actually create an alias of the file rather than a copy. Without 
holding down any keys.

I've been caught by it a couple of times, maybe this is what happened to you?
