All files are accessable anyway. (OS 8.6 on both machines.)
The space available value in the AppleShare Filing Protocol (AFP) uses a signed 32 bit value which means it's limited to 2Gb. I believe that when Apple was designing the spec they figured that 2Gb was way bigger than would ever be used. The first AS server (AS 2.0 I think) was an SE/30 with an 80Mb drive in it (wow!). I can only surmise that they used a signed number because it allows easier arithmetic and is more standard in programming. Some versions of AppleShare (possibly ASIP) use a signed 32 bit value so they do show up to 4Gb. One improvement was to always show 4 Gb until the available space dropped below that value. Earlier versions of AS would basically show the lower 32 bits of the available space so the free space would show say 1Mb free if you really had 9Mb free (or 13 or 16,...). This was a problem when the listed free space dropped really low and some programs like AppleWorks used that number to determine if there was room to save a file or not. -- Clark Martin Redwood City, CA, USA Macintosh / Internet Consulting [EMAIL PROTECTED] "I'm a designated driver on the Information Super Highway" -- G-List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
