I believe that the pRAM is a special memory chip in the computer that remembers some stuff, when the computer is shut off. It remembers the time, date, and other things. I think pRAM stands for parameter Random Access Memory, but I am likely incorrect. A battery keeps the pRAM from forgetting the time, etc., if the computer is unplugged from the wall. (When plugged into the wall, there is Always a trickle of electricity going to the pRAM chip.) Occasionally (quite seldom) the pRAM chip gets corrupted data, and causes the computer to misbehave. Zapping the pRAM clears out the memory in pRAM, and allows the computer to function again, with "clear thinking." On some Macs, a dead or weak pRAM battery makes the computer do weird things. hth
