Greetings,

I've had an 17" G4 iMac with 768mb RAM since August 2002. This has
proven to be a beautiful to look at computer, but I've had a terrible
time keeping the OS working. The folks at Apple Care are nice, but they
haven't figured out the source of the problem, except for getting it
working again after system freezes, etc.

My older Beige G3 using OS 9.2, which I've had for a long time has none
of problems my new iMac has.

My three older 5500/250, 5400/180, and 5400/120's never just quit or
lock-up in perpetuity.

Comments I've received from the Apple folks have been, "10.2 is what
10.1.5 was supposed to be", and on another occasion, "10.1.5 has got a
few things that 10.2 fixed", and so forth.

With Apple Care's guidance, I've gone as far as reinstalling the
complete restoration three (3) times since Aug 2002. This is ridiculous.
Likewise, I've gone through numerous trips to OS 9.2 to verify and
repair Btrees, etc.

Most recently, OS X simply went to blue screen. In this case, the Apple
Care rep walked me through several UNIX tests, as well as zapping the
PRAM. That worked for a day.

The next day, back to OS 9 and Btree repair.

Folks, I don't get it. This 17" iMac is driving me nuts. And I'm only
running one suite of programs (Adobe's Design Collection: Illustrator
10, Photoshop 7, Acrobat 5, and InDesign 2) which operates in either 9
or 10; supposedly. However, I normally use these programs in OSX, up
until recently, when it went to "blue screen" after start-up.

Here is my question - hopefully to someone else who's using a 17" G4
iMac with OS 10.1.5:

1. Have you had any abnormalities with OS 10.1.5?
2. What seemed to cause the problems?
3. What did Apple Care tell you the problem was?
4. Did you find a solution that made any sense - vice zapping PRAM,
re-installing OS restoration, reinstalling OSX, and bouncing back to OS9
to do verify and repair constantly?

I would sincerely appreciate anyone's expertise on this situation.

One last note...I asked the folks at Apple if my purchasing OS 10.2
would get rid of these problems, in that it would be worth my while to
simply purchase a new OS IF they believed it would fix the problem.
Their response -- "I don't think a new OS will fix your problem". I got
this answer about 3 or 4 times, nearly verbatim, from several of their
representatives. Notwithstanding, if anyone has FIXED a similar
instability problem (such as mine) by upgrading to 10.2, I would love to
hear about it. However, if I likely have a hardware problem, that
wouldn't make any sense.

Again, I would MOST sincerely appreciate anyone advise as soon as
possible, as this is the only Mac we have that I can stand to look at
for graphics design.

Tim
