This shows the ATA Seagate is faster than the 4.5Gb F&W SCSI drive, which
really surprises me as they're all 7200rpm drives.

I do intend to seek another 18Gb (thanks, eBay) when Bank Manager & Wife
permit, but if Kyle or any other HD guru out there knows if it's inherently
down to the different models, I'd be v. grateful if they would shed light on
my darkness.

IBM, and others, are continually upgrading their firmware.

The internal transfer rate of drives with the same rpm and same aerial
density is going to be about the same.

The external transfer rate is a function of the device protocol overhead, the
caching schemes, and a great many other factors.

The later the SCSI drive, the higher the performance, in general.

Large LVD/SE drives are capable of external transfer rates which are
astonishingly high.

The performance you observed with your DNES series is more typical of an UW
SCSI drive than your DDRS series.

Right now, I think the "sweet spot" for UW SCSI drives is in the 18 GB class,
and it may soon be in the 36 GB class.

As for price per gigabyte, UATA is likely to be favored for the foreseeable
future.
