The Beige mobo's EIDE/UATA controllers are theoretically limited to 16.67 
MB/sec.

With a UATA/133 controller (and drive), the performance is limited by the 
Beige's bus.

Personally, I have found an UATA/66 controller (and any drive from /66 to 
/133) is near optimal for the Beige.
