Are you able to boot from the cd with the extensions off? Are there PCI cards (other than the video card) installed? Do you have 3rd-party ram installed (especially anything recently added)? Is there anything attached to the firewire port? What happens if you disconnect the hard drive and boot from cd? Shutdown is initiated by a command in the Special menu or by tapping the power key on your keyboard (located at the top-right of the board). Hitting the power button on the front of the tower should do nothing while the system is running (unless it is in the early stages of boot).
