I think it's the floppy drive and/or its cable, so the next question is, can
I replace it with the drive and cable that are in my defunct PowerMac 7500?

Any of the floppy drives made with or after the SE/30 or SE FDHD are (then)
so-called "Super Drives", IOW, these are combo CGR (i.e., 800 KB) and MFM
(i.e., 1.44 MB) drives.

The physical interface of these and later desktop and tower drives are the
same, although the later drives incorporated a protective door.

A floppy from a 7500 would indeed be interchangeable with the one in your
Beige.

Tip: if you want to reclaim the floppy bay on your Beige MT, say, you can
remote the 20 pin cable from the Beige's mono to the outside world, where you can
plug in any external floppy drive available with the SE/30 and SE (FDHD)
models.
