Now I start up=
with an EXTRENAL drive running and suddenly the presumably dead drive is=
back. I reboot and turn the external drive off. Dead drive is dead again.=

Why, oh why?
Beats me as well. This beige G3 I have is my first real experience with ATA, and what a weird beast it is. Makes SCSI voodoo seem benign. I even have one of the later models (August '97, Rev. C) but have noticed the following oddities:
If any ATA device is un-powered but left connected to the IDE chain that whole chain is lost. For example, you want to power up and force a drive to spin up later --- can't seem to do it. The machine gives a startup chime but stays dead (no video).
I currently have hosed my main drive and the backup I was making due to a botched Carbon Copy Clone operation (Mr. Bombich, wherever you are, you have a lot of work still to do!) Neither drive will allow the machine to boot, no even from CD. Thankfully I can see the drive, and contents when connected via FireWire to a (modern) Mac. Here's hoping I can now repair it from there before subjecting it to the beige beast (aka Daddy's little Time Waster) again. MMmpphh!
Thanks for listening, as always.
