Hello all. I was wondering how the air flow situation is in the Fold
down Blue G3s and Graphite and MDD G4s. If its not good, how well does full AT
towers (w/ 8 drive bays) compare?
First, the MDD is significantly different to the others in the heat path, and I have no experience with it. Therefore, assume I am only talking of the Yosemite Case. I have intimate experience with both a Blue G3 and a dual Quicksilver G4, and have built three performance PCs and two cheapies. I have never done the Mac->ATX conversion.
The airflow is actually pretty good. It is back-to-back, so be careful if mounting in controlled flow racks, as those, like ATX cases are front-to-back. With a G3/450, CDROM and one 10k SCSI drive, the temperature at the back was not much above ambient, but that changed with the addition of a DVD-RAM. The biggest problem with the pre-quicksilver models is that the heat of the hard drives taints the air hitting the CPU. Quicksilvers had a duct added to keep fresh air at the CPU.
Simply taking the guts from a Yosemite-eque case and shoving in an ATX fulltower will not improve heat performance, and may hinder quite significantly, model depending. You *will* need to add a heatsink fan and at least one additional case fan. If the goal of the conversion is cooling, I would use not less than four case fans and liberal use of hard drive coolers.
