I just acquired a G3 MT that has a Ethernet card installed in the PCI slot.
Why is or for what purpose does this card serve when there's already a
Ethernet port on the rear of the MAChine?

This machine is the first one I have purchased with a card installed. My
other 15 or so G3's are all networked thru the Ethernet port on the rear of
the machine...

Bunch of good reasons to do this. Most obvious if the card is a 10/100 card, as the built in only supports 10Mb transfers.
Less obvious is for use as a router. One represents an "in", the other an "out". You can do a bunch of functions such as address translation, firewalling or port mapping on the computer for use on the network.
