Just picked up a B&W G3 - 400. It had 128M of RAM which I increased to 384M. The System is FAST, running Mac OS X 10.2 with patch 6 and Mac OS Classic 9.2.2. My Question is about upgrade experiences. This machine is a REV 2. THX to Lowend Mac and xlr8 for pointing out the Rev 1. and Rev 2. Diffs... It has an ATI RAGE 128 PCI card.
I overclocked it to 450MHz, no lockups, and I added a CPU FAN for safe measure.
Question;
Is it worth it for a PCI MAC Edition RADION 32MB 7000 card? I am looking at $100 USD
That's a decent price for that card. It will speed up Quake; I like mine, but I'm not a game junkie; I liked the dual video at fast refreshes.
What is the performance increase with a G4 ZIF upgrade at 400MHz/450MHz or 533MHz? Is it worth the ?200 USD
OSX utilizes the altivec in the GUI, so a G4 is worth it, imo. But I also use apps that take advantage of it, as well. I got my G4/450 Zif for $180 at OWC. Runs like a champ.
Is QUARTZ Extreme worth the $300 upgrades, I paid $300 for the unit.
If you're doing this primarily to get QE, then don't do it. At *best* QE will get you a 5% boost in speed, in return for increased crashiness.
Apple doesn't run it on PCI for a reason, not just to piss off people who don't have AGP systems.
I am a UNIX junky and a MAC Hobbiest that plays some Quake2 and Quake III.
Really, I've never known someone who was that much into ethernet that they were a MAC hobbyist... :-P
(note, 'MAC' generally refers to 'Media Access Control', the hardware ethernet address. It is written in all caps because it is an acronym.
'Mac' refers to the Macintosh computer, it is wirtten the way it is because it is a contraction of a given name.
PC is written in all caps because, like MAC, (and unlike Mac) it is an acronym.
Unix is spelled any which way, apparently, including, but not limited to 'Jones' ;-)
(Sorry, a pet peeve of mine.)
That said, if you're a unix person, get the O'Reilly book 'Mac OSX for Unix Geeks'...<http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/mosxgeeks/>. It's avery valuable resource, especially if you're unfamiliar with BSD-ish and Next-ish unix variants.
