Yeah, me too to some extent. I'm not a grammar expert by any means --- I
can't even remember to help myself by hitting spell check most of the
time --- but realizing that 'Mac' refers to a 'Macintosh' I've just
never understood why it's often spelled 'MAC'. Perhaps it's thought
that 'MAC' is in fact proper? Or is it perpetuated just because it's so
prevalent?

MAC is the Hardware acronym. Mac is Macintosh. There is a different. Like Copier and Xerox machine (ok not quite like it but close enough).
