Two types of B&W Mother Boards, Rev A and Rev B. Get your hands on a Rev B.

The Rev B has an improved IDE controller that overcomes the short falls of the Rev A board and it allows for 3 internal hard drives to be added. The Rev A only has a single Hard Drive bracket with a single drive installed. I have 3 hard drives currently installed in my B&W Rev B and still have room for one more drive.

The Rev B has a "faster" ATI Rage 128 Video card. The Rev A B&W does not have a heat sink on the Rage128 chip, the B does. Rev A has a 90 MHz Rage128 chip and the B has a 120 MHz Rage128 chip (not 100% sure about those numbers).

If you can, get your hands on a 400 or 450 MHz unit. A 300 MHz unit will run OS X but a 400/450 will do a much better job. I installed a Radeon 7000 Video Card and 512 Meg RAM and OS X runs much smoother now on my G3-450.

The B&W Mac is a great "Bang for your Buck" machine. I plan on installing a 500 MHz G4 ZIF processor upgrade when I get the money together. One serious short fall of the B&W G3 is the lack of an AGP slot. The Radeon 7000 or Mac Edition Radeon PCI is the best card you can get for the machine, there are no G-Force or Radeon 9000 cards available at this time for the B&W G3. Don't get a Yikes G4, it is a B&W G3 with a G4 ZIF upgrade and the lack of the ADB port. Get a B&W and a ZIF upgrade, unless you can get a Yikes for a good price. A Yikes G4 also lacks the AGP slot.

http://www.lowendmac.com and http://www.xlr8yourmac.com both have excellent write ups on the Rev A and Rev B differences. I do not remember if they describe the extra Hard Drive Brackets.

One last note. Only the Adaptec 2930 Domain SCSI Controller is bootable. The 2940 or Orange Micro SCSI cards are not bootable by this machine. There is SCSI and there is MAC SCSI.

My current config

Apple Blue & White 400 MHz
PowerColor Radeon 7000 32 Meg DDR with ATI Radeon 7000 Flashed BIOS
Overclocked at 450MHz
512 Meg Ram
LG 48x24x48x 16x DVD/CDRW combo drive
2 SCSI Drives 1 IDE Drive and a ZIP Drive

I really want a G4 for the Mac OS X interface.

Just my 2 cents
