Actually, this is the only way it happens that I CAN boot into nine on the separate volume. The problem is when I want to boot into 8 from 10, I first have to do that procedure, the boot into 8 from 9. It's just laborious and I'm confused as to why it must happen this way. And I'm compulsive enough to not give up until I find a solution!!
Go get the hacked Startup disk control panel from the Unsupported OSX site on OWC's web site., The startup disk cp on 8 will not properly set the startup disk for X.
