Nothing, there's nothing you can REALLY do. Its been many a year since I had to describe this, but... A 56K connection requires a digital signal, from the telco CO to your ISP this is the case..however, its that last mile from CO to your home where the problem happens. Anything more than a single analogue-to-digital-converter takes the ability of a v90 modem and ruins it, not only that, but due to degradation on the line, you rarely see the maximum analogue speeds of 33.6. Usually you end up at 26.4. Now, there;s always one ADC on the line, in teh CO.. But, if when laying copper for your area if the telco skimped on cost they can use additional ADCs to help them from having to build a new CO. What can you do? Make sure you have the latest firmware for your modem, there's a chance some routine has been cleared up in that time which will help you out. You'll also want to pull any splitters, answering machines, etc from the line between your wall jack and your modem. If you want to be really careful about it, try going and connecting directly at teh NID, this removes any internal wiring from being a problem. You can also try dialing some different telephone numbers from your ISP, its possible that your call may take a different route and bypass that second ADC. Other than that? You suffer. Sorry. Don't take it out on the ISP, its not their fault. -- http://www.infotainment.org <-> more fun than a poke in your eye. http://www.eighteenpercent.com <-> photography and portfolio. -- G-List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
