Does anyone know of a *good* .AVI player for OS 9?

No such thing. Players are evil, all evil. :) Essentially, Players are just alternative GUIs to QuickTime, that's all. I use one called Play It Cool. http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/277

The real issue is the codecs you have installed. Microsoft's AVI, like Apple's MOV, is a container file -- it can contain audio and video data in many different formats.

The automatic update thing in the QuickTime Settings control panel will obtain the basic Indeo codecs, from Intel. They will handle some of the AVI formats.

You can buy the MPEG-2 codec from Apple.

QuickTime 6.0.3 and later includes the MPEG-1 and -3 and -4 codecs.

You can get the DivX codec from divx.com.

You can get the 3ivx codec from 3ivx.com.

A few more AVI formats are supported by MS' Windows Media Player. But for the rest of the AVI formats - we're screwed. They're MS proprietary, only supported in WMP for the PC.
