Guess you should go get a degree in design and get a job at Intel, they're the ones who did it.

possibly the worst advice i've ever heard! always, always use the clips, unless
you are using an adhesive thermal pad, which is probably what the sender thinks
he's seen. you want the thinnest possible layer of grease, and the clip
pressure does help slowly reduce it over time, and holds things together long
after the grease would have dried and a bump of the outside of the case would
knock it off. the pressure does in fact also help improve the heat transfer.
i've never, never seen anyone do anything as stupid as suggested below, and i've
worked on some pretty junky consumer gear in my time!!
