well, gee. in addition to repairing things for years, i've also designed things, things that went into equipment our company sold that went for over $250,000 and which were mostly exported. i've seen all the catalogs from the people who make heat sink compounds, and heatsinks. what you've seen was either from some brain dead sudo-tech, or actually the thin adhesive film thermal compounds. there are now dozens of heatsink compounds and insulator pads, both adhesive and non-adhesive. i've had "real" jobs, and i do actually know what i'm talking about. but feel free to shorten the life span of your equipment anyway you like. do you honestly think those clips don't cost money and that if they weren't necessary manufacturers would still buy them and use them in a commodity market like pc's? not likely.
