But, you said you heard a similar sound, in the Sawtooth, so maybe there's something "buzzing" near the CPU, in such a way that you think it's coming from the CPU? If both are making the same noise, at regular intervals, check that you're not plugged into a line that also has some sort of auto-start device. At one time, the Macs mom and I have used were on the same line that the refrigerator was plugged into. I'm guessing that's what killed the PSU, in my old AIO case, as well as the Apple 15" MultiScan monitor that we were using with mom's Performa 6360. Dad and I put installed a 4-outlet box, and dedicated line to the breaker box, and the only time my Mac and equipment is bothered, now, is with brownouts...no UPS, so we're screwed, if it's a blackout.
