If your philips came from surplus computers, you best send it back. We bought a case of Philips CDRW's and every one malfunctioned. Same story, the OS converted to snale speed, and each command took minutes to function. To test it, shut down. Disconnect all wiring to CDRW, then power up again. If it is a bad drive, your os will be back to normal speed. Some schools say to use the "slave" pins in the rear of the drive, and some say to not use any pins. You can try that next, once you rule out a bad drive.
