I am thinking of upgrading from a G3 to a fast G4.This was a problem with the first series of MDD (Mirrored Drive Doors) models. Dual 867, Dual 1 Gig and Dual 1.25 Gig, known as the "Wind Tunnels".
But I have heard that they are noisy or at least some of them are noisy.
Is this a problem with all G4's?
Or is this problem just with one model of the G4?
Apple came out with a "kit" for the affected models. There is also a third party solution, Verax to quiet these models even further. The follow on FW 800 MDD models were quieter. The new G5 is extremely quiet.
Has the noise issue been fixed by Apple?
It was not a problem with upgrade cards. It was a problem with Apple's own production. They fixed it to the satisfaction of most owners.
I would like to get up to at least the 800 MGHTZ. speed range if possible. There is no inherent "noise issue" with the G4, other than it generates more heat than a G3 so more cooling may be required and there are huge differences in fan noise between el cheapo fans and top of the line fans. Investigate carefully when buying fans to get the air flow you need, and a noise level you are happy with.
If I get a used G4, I'm not sure that I am looking forward to all the noise.
