Hi What you might want to consider doing is get in touch with Matsushita who made the cd-rom drive originally and see if they have any firmware updates to offer, the only drawback on this is that the majority of cd-rom drives need to be bunged in a pc then the firmware update has to be run either through MS-Dos and occasionally windows (NT Systems)
Its only recent systems that Apples Software Update recognises for firmware updates, like the ones for hard drives and cd drives that have proliferated over the past few months (especially the superdrive) The drive is a IDE drive though so realistically, I would have thought you could just replace it with another cd-rom drive, asus or LG make good all round compatibility drives. On newer machines I have had a tendency to stick to replacing Apples proprietary drives with Sony branded affairs, for example replacing a Sony CD-Rw in a Quicksilver G4 for a Sony DVD/CD-RW Combo Drive, I had to install Toast Titanium to get the burning working because Apple didnt support the drive straight out of the box but for reading DVD's and Disks it was more than happy as it just uses the ATAPI Protocol. ATAPI is An abbreviation for AT Attachment Packet Interface. ATAPI is the protocol by which CD-ROM drives communicate with a computer system over an IDE interface. So hopefully all should be good, and a replacement drive wont cost the earth and will not batter your ears daily. I invite anybody to verify or challenge my comments here as I don't have any real experience of Beige Macintosh Systems (Barring a Shed of a G3 Server we use for iSDN).
