Yes, that's what routers are for. In times past, I used to try to connect
two Macs (OS X and otherwise) via a single cross-over cable, with results
varying from day to day. Later I added a hub - much better, but to log on I
had to replicate what you described. Changed to a router, and now four Macs
and a PC "lovingly" share the same IP address. The only time I have to go
into the older AppleShare and reset "to ethernet" is if I've had to zap the
PRAM.
