I had purchased a new 2.0 PCI USB card a while back for my G3 beige. I am running OS 9.1 now. You mention a download from Apple I'm guessing, to install prior to installing the USB card.
I'm not sure if the card is O or E but it is a five port with one port internal and four external accesses.
