Check the Office X "Save as" dialog box for various versions of Word to save it as. It was my understanding that these two different versions of Office were supposed to play nice. If the docs don't have too much fancy stuff in them, you could always save as rich text format (rtf)...

Always Office98 Word .docs (Mac) would open in Office 2000 and XP just fine, and vice versa mostly.

I've got OS X and Office X now, I've sent my wife 1 word .doc that she could not read in Office XP (workflow was: she sent me a .doc, I edited, resaved, sent back, it's not readable by OfficeXP), and one of her students just sent her another OfficeX document that again she can't read (I've not yet received it on my Mac to test it there).

Is this the return of the bad old days of willful incompatibility?
