Hmm - anyone think that usng AppleWorks as a "middleman" app could help?
Open original in AW; resave in Office format; open from Office X.

Actually the REAL headache is the reverse- stuff that students send my wife form their OS X MAcs, she cannot open on OfficeXP.
In theory there should be NO difference between the file formats of the two versions.
When I get into work on Monday I'll ask around, as I'm sure people here have run into this problem. It hasn't been brought to my attention, though, which makes me think they haven't had that problem.
As a workaround, your wife could install OpenOffice <http://www.openoffice.org> and see if it successfully opens the Office X docs, then she should be able to save them in a form Office XP can, but that's a little extreme. (Though I've had good luck using OpenOffice to open Word, Excel and PowerPoint files that Office said were corrupt and not openable)
Also have her check to make sure:
The .doc extension is on these files, maybe that's confusing her Office.
Possibly Office XP on her system needs to be deleted and re-installed. Also, I believe Microsoft has released at least two service packs (aka updates) for Office XP, she should apply these.
Also, Windows XP is like OS X, each user has their own prefs and such, perhaps hers have gotten corrupted, can another user on that machine open the files?
A common problem with Word is that the default file type is sticky: I've gotten a number of calls about 'Word is broken, all my files are corrupted' when they selected 'Recover text from any file' in the File > Open dialog once; it stays that way once chosen and can be a real gotcha.
The file's not really corrupted, just opened they way it's supposed to with that option.
