My response may be like beating a dead horse, but I found a really easy way that doesn't involve "pointer targeting". Just grab a message in your message list and drag it to the right or left side of the main Mail.app window. The panel drawer will automatically track which side you're dragging to and change positions. Once in the desired spot, hit the ESC key to cancel the drag operation. I've only tested under Panther with Mail 1.3.3.
