Basically the boot CD checks the hardware and refuses to boot if it doesn't match up. The link below for XPostFacto should give you all the info you need on putting Panther on your beige. I've said it countless times before, make sure you have a 10.3 supported PCI video card (onboard is not supported), plenty of ram (~512MB), and something other than the onboard drive controllers is highly recommended.

If you decide to go this route, please spend some quality time with the documentation. Many problems have been encountered, with many suitable workarounds. However, this method isn't always as easy as the point and click installations we're familiar with, and may present an issue for newbies.
It's a great project that can yield some very positive results, just be sure you're prepared for any issues that may arise.
