Now that, although having experienced it, I can't totally explain.
My best assumption is that the OS X cd temporarily over-rides the PRAM settings (making sure you start and install with clean prefs), and only addresses the HDD *after* the drivers load from the kernel. If the SystemID is scanned before drivers are loaded, it halts the boot process and displays the "duhhh?" icon :)
Anyone else got any ideas?
