It may be the case that you don't have the iTunes CD process quite right or that the CD burner attached to your beige won't work with iTunes. Please answer these questions:

Have you ever burned a CD from any purchased songs?

What CD burner are you using on your beige?

Can you burn data CDs with it using just Finder or Disk Utility?

What version of iTunes are you running?

Have you, indeed, played a purchased song since deauthorizing your beige?

BTW, the iPod doesn't count as a computer in the total number you can authorize.
