First is a peculular hang during boot up which occurs after the icons on the desk top appear but before the control strip appears after which I can procede to what ever program I desire. The hang is 40 sesonds long during which the computer takes input such as mouse clicks but it dosn't act on them untill the 40 seconds is up and the control strip appears.

Is TCP/IP set to DHCP? If so, that's the DHCP Client probing for a server. It locks up the Mac until it either gets a response or times out.

Another possibility is auto-mount AppleShare volumes.

The second problem is crashes and freezes and bombs in Eudora 5.1.
It frequently freezes or crashes while opening mail that has to load graphics or pictures.

Known issue with Eudora 5. You can try giving Eudora 5 more memory (12000K is not unreasonable), but the real solution is to upgrade to Eudora 6. Don't give Eudora 6 xtra memory, btw. It comes with it's pref size set very high to begin with.

If you turn off "Automatically download HTML graphics" (Fonts & Display pane) is the stability improved? ...Frankly, that should be kept off anyway. Trying to load HTML graphics is how spammers track you with web bugs.

I also cannot print while I am on line.

Details?

I tried down loading Eudora 6 but could never get it to retreve my email,I could send but not recieve.

Settings problem. Try setting up the servers via the Personalities and Personality Extras panes, not the Getting Started et al.

If that doesn't work, check the Eudora Log file for the actual error messages and take action from there.

Also E6 would take over E5.1 and convert all the data within including address book none of which I have been able to recover.

I've seen a couple of people run into problems during the 5->6 transition. No big deal tho - the files that get messed are hackable.

Any one know of a MAC friendlier Email program? If I can find one I'll dump Eudora.

Eudora is very Mac friendly. In fact, it was originally Mac-only; one of the few products to survive so long. Initial release was in 1990, I believe.

The third problem is crashes in Interner Explorer 5.

Give Explorer more memory. Clear its caches frequently. Expect crashes - it's terminated Microcrap software.

I have read with interest the posts about bad RAM in the B&W. Since this machine has some used RAM in it is that a possibility for some of the quirks or "buggy" operation that I experience?

Possibly. Run one of the memory tests overnight. Also scan all your HD volumes with Disk First Aid - make sure they're clean.

And if so how does one find out which is the bad one?

Trial and error.

But from your description, it sounds to me more like you just have a basic Email and Explorer problem.
