Hi there: I'm thinking about installing an internal CD-RW drive to replace
the current CD drive in my B&W G3/rev2/400/9.1/385mb. What should I keep in
mind? This is new territory for me.

1) Brands to consider or avoid?
2) Technical specs I should know about (IDE, SCSI, USB, Firewire [whatever
that is] etc.)
3) Is it worth considering second-hand or refurbished (EBay etc.)?
4) Necessary software; this would be for backups, and to record music CDs
5) What I might expect to pay for this

Check the CDRW reports at <http://www.xlr8yourmac.com>

In 9.1 I'm unsure of what is supported, but under OS X a large number of PC-centric models are supported natively (disc Burning and iTunes music CD burning) . I have a Lite-ON 48-12-48 CDRW drive that works in my system, but I know the range of models supported by OS X are larger than 9.1.

The Xlr8yourmac site also has instructions on hacking drivers to work,

Now, if you get Toast to do the burning, virtually any modern CDRW will work, but it may not be bootable.

If you're looking for an external, don't mess with USB, just get a firewire one, and a cheap firewire card from someplace like OWC (they were ~$20 last I looked.)
