     If you want plug and play with no hassle you can go for one of the 
cdrw drives listed on the Apple site here

     The Sony ide drives are particularly good. NEC drives are lacking in 
support for 9 and X and support is patchy for most other PC cdrw's.
     The Pioneer 103 and 104 DVD/CDRW ide drives are plug and play in 9 
and X but later models can have hard disk sleep problems and freeze on 
wake - annoying but easily avoided with no hard disk sleep. 
     Firmware revisions to improve the Pioneer drives are also a problem 
- the flash must be done on a PC (region free is best done in dos) except 
for very specific later mac models with the update from Apple.
