Neil,
For the iTunes issue try running a permission repair. Permissions repair seems to address all sorts of odd behavior such as your iTunes issue.
You can download iTunes 4.5 outside the software update system pref here:

i've tried turning off the firewall and that doesn't help at all, nor does going around the router. i'm pretty sure its setting on the mac i have to change. i can download updates directly from the apple site, just not using the link from system preferences. i still can't download itunes 4.5 though, and my old itunes doesn't work. does anyone know why it might have changed the valid music files? i am stumped.
