Hi,

I just joined this list. I have a 9600/300 running a G3. I need some
form of anti-virus software, but have no idea what to get.

I get several emails a day "returned" saying the "text of the message
was deleted" blah, blah due to a virus being detected. Netsky or
MyDoom are then indicated below that. I recognize most of the email
addresses as being in my address book, but not always. Some of the
"returned messages" I do not recognize at all.

You are NOT sending the viruses.

1) All the viruses in the wild today are PC only. You're running a Mac, you cannot pass them along unless it's deliberately.

2) All viruses for the last two years or so have forged the 'From:' headers of the infected e-mails they send out in an effort to hide their true origin. All of those messages you're being told you sent were sent by another computer, one that had both the recipient's e-mail address and the "sender's" e-mail address in their address book or elsewhere on their computer (in web caches)

The idiots running the servers sending you the messages are too ignorant to turn off the notification e-mails. They do nothing but add to the e-mail congestion caused by the viruses.
