Firmware is software code that is embedded on a hardware device like a
ROM chip say. Often it is preset and cannot be modified, although you
may have heard of an EPROM chip (Erasable Programmable Read Only
Memory), in which the software code can be modified.

Subject: Really basic question

So what is "firmware?" Apparently it's not software or hardware, or
wetware (as a former co-worker called one's brain), let alone
silverware...

The brain is a wonderful organ. It starts working the moment you get up
in the morning and does not stop until you get into the office.
