My "legacy" SCSI equipment (two scanners and a SyQuest drive) are connected to my G-4 via an Adaptec 2906 card in one of the Mac's PCI slots that is also running two 18-gig SCSI drives inside the Mac.

Although the two SCSI drives inside the Mac don't give any trouble, I can't keep the external chain plugged into to the card because it makes the Mac go flaky with all kinds of things from hang-ups to error messages of various sorts. So, I only plug the outside chain into the system when I need to use a scanner or fill up a SyQuest disk, then I unplug it again.

I wish I had not bought this Adaptec 2906 SCSI card at all. It won't allow booting from the internal SCSI drives, and I have noticed other people complaining about the problems it causes.

My question: is there a better SCSI card out there somewhere, one that allows booting from internal drives that are connected to it, and is also trouble-free? (Or is there no such thing as trouble-free SCSI)?

Or is there a better way to run all these old SCSI devices besides a SCSI card, such as a SCSI to USB converter (is there such an animal)?

Thanks,

Tom
