when more modern monitors startup, they actually have a serial port connection to the
computer and give detailed information on their capability, this is done through the 
pins
that used to simply be jumpered to give similar but less complete information.  try
unplugging and replugging the monitor connection and possibly cleaning the connectors. 
that's probably where the problem is, though it's possible there's a cracked solder 
joint
on the video card at the connector or somewhere else in the card or monitor, if it's 
the
card other monitors will likely have similar problems, though it could be 
intermittent. 
failing that, griffin technology (just do a web search) has a utility to force that
information into the card, any monitor information you want i believe, useful if you 
don't
want to have to turn the monitor on last, or with some particular monitors.  i forget 
what
it's called, but it's there in the download section and it's free.  hope this helps.
