Did you do a full restore from your G3 CD or just installed OS 8.5?  If you were just 
installing the OS I would bypass this step and go straight to OS 9.2.2 (I'm assuming 
you have an OS 9.x install CD?).

As suggested by others, zap the PRAM and see if that straightens out your startup 
problem.  It sounds like maybe it is going into "open firmware" perhaps in which case 
you can try typing reset-all and hit return and it should reboot I think.
