I am a new subscriber here, perhaps you folks can help me with my B&W G# that will not boot after installing a second hard drive.

The first hard drive was left set to master and the hard drive was set to slave.
The chime sounded and the gray screen appeared for a second or so then went blank.
The drives get power and initilise, but there is no video and no chime when the G3 is turned on.

The G3 has a 12GB hard drive, 24x CD-ROM, a ZIP 100 drive,256MB RAM and an ATI Rage 128 video card. (16MB VRAM)

The video card is fine, it is now in my Power Mac 8500 for the time being.

I suspect that the motherboard is the Revision 1 board, hence the problem. I would invest in a PCI IDE controller card, but I think that might not help since there is no chime.

If you look at the new features link I've posted before you can figure out if you have a Rev1 or 2.

If you have a Rev2 you can try this, even if you have a Rev1 sometimes this helps to boot the G3 to copy data from one drive to another:

Have you tried to zap the PRAM? (hold Apple key+ Option+ P+R at boot and release after you've heard the third chime).
I highly recommend a CUDA reset. When you open up the case you see two little buttons on the mobo just beneath the PCI slots and located near the battery. There are two buttons, I believe the CUDA is the one closest to the battery, but you may want to press and hold both of them for 10 seconds (with the power cord removed). The CUDA button is a reset button for the mobo which you can use after you've installed new hardware. I've used it several times.

If you indeed have a Rev1 than a PCI IDE controller is your last resort, I bought one myself, the Sonnet ATA133 RAID version, which has two HDs in RAID 0 in my B&W G3.
