also, if you are using it for email, you should periodically delete the summary (.snm)
files as they tend to become larger than the files with the actual emails for some odd
reason (most likely a bug).  i've seen summary files several times bigger than the file
that actually had the emails in them, and it will be rebuilt the next time you compact 
a
mail folder or empty the mail trash.  you can also limit the plugins etc. that you are
using and limiting the number of bookmarks you have will probably also help.  of course
you can also set up a large virtual memory partition (i use a separate partition for 
this
as it otherwise suffers from and contributes to fragmentation, which slows things 
down). 
most applications work better with vm on in any case as does the memory management of 
the os.
