It will work fine, so will putting both 9 and X on a single drive with or without partitions. Lots of flexibility, it mostly depends on the how you plan to use the QS for day to day tasks, and how much you'll use 9? One thing to consider if 9 is important, is to partition one of the drives and put X on one partition and 9 on another on the same HD. This will let you use the option key trick to select between them at startup should the need arise.
There's an excellent discussion on the the pros and cons of of multiple boot drives, partitioning, etc. in David Pouge's "OSX The Missing Manual". Any of the various scenarios will work. Only you can decide which best fits the things you want to do with your computer.
