I have two drives in my G4 also and I  have 9 on one  x on the other 
and I can also use the option  key to boot from . I like that way alot 
better then doing the partition thing  I know I set up alot Macs that 
way iad it works great but I know everyone has better  way of doing 
things

It will work fine, so will putting both 9 and X on a single drive 
with or without partitions. Lots of flexibility, it mostly depends on 
the how you plan to use the QS for day to day tasks, and how much 
you'll use 9? One thing to consider if 9 is important, is to 
partition one of the drives and put X on one partition and 9 on 
another on the same HD. This will let you use the option key trick to 
select between them at startup should the need arise.

There's an excellent discussion on the the pros and cons of of 
multiple boot drives, partitioning, etc.  in David Pouge's "OSX The 
Missing Manual".  Any of the various scenarios will work. Only you 
can decide which best fits the things you want to do with your 
computer.

Very well put Jack, I wanted to say the exact same thing but I could 
not get the words to flow!  I've managed many multi-OS machines in the 
past (mostly PC's) and have found that the main thing is to organize 
the drives in a way as to best suite the user's needs.  I've also 
found that it's best of have a seperate partition/drive for the data 
that you want to keep so that if you need to reformat or repartition 
the OS you can do so without losing your data.
