Isn't the 1000 a better choice if Steve's main apps don't take advantage of Altivec?

Possibly, but all in all, I expect that he'd be better served by dumping the beige, and spending the money instead on a newer system, say a sawtooth G4 or something, simply gritting his teeth and hanging in until he can afford a new iMac G5, or gritting his teeth and choking back the vomit and buy a cheapo PC to run that one Windows app.
